What happens if you drink 6 glasses of water a day for a year?
6 glasses is about 1.50 litres a day and 548 litres a year — below the ~2 litres most adults need from drinks.
The numbers
Timeline: what happens, and when
- Day 12 L
2 litres (0 gallons) — 0.01 bathtubs. You are 1 litres below the ~2 L/day mark; mild chronic dehydration shows up as headaches, fatigue and poor concentration long before thirst does.
- After 1 week11 L
11 litres (3 gallons) — 0.07 bathtubs. You are 4 litres below the ~2 L/day mark; mild chronic dehydration shows up as headaches, fatigue and poor concentration long before thirst does.
- After 1 month45 L
45 litres (12 gallons) — 0.30 bathtubs. You are 15 litres below the ~2 L/day mark; mild chronic dehydration shows up as headaches, fatigue and poor concentration long before thirst does.
- After 3 months135 L
135 litres (36 gallons) — 0.90 bathtubs. You are 45 litres below the ~2 L/day mark; mild chronic dehydration shows up as headaches, fatigue and poor concentration long before thirst does.
- After 6 months270 L
270 litres (71 gallons) — 1.80 bathtubs. You are 90 litres below the ~2 L/day mark; mild chronic dehydration shows up as headaches, fatigue and poor concentration long before thirst does.
- After 1 year548 L
548 litres (145 gallons) — 3.65 bathtubs. You are 183 litres below the ~2 L/day mark; mild chronic dehydration shows up as headaches, fatigue and poor concentration long before thirst does.
What this actually means
Thirst is a late signal
By the time you feel thirsty you are typically already 1–2% dehydrated, which is enough to measurably reduce concentration, mood and physical performance.
The 8-glasses rule is a rule of thumb, not physiology
Total fluid needs (~2.7 L for women, ~3.7 L for men including food) come partly from food and other drinks. Urine colour is a better daily gauge than a glass count.
Swapping is where the real effect is
Water replacing sugary drinks removes roughly 150 calories per drink. Water replacing water changes very little.
What if you changed the number?
Same habit, different size. Each one is a full simulation of its own.

Frequently asked questions
Is 6 glasses of water a day enough?
It is about 1.50 litres, below the ~2 L/day usually recommended from drinks. Hot weather and exercise raise the requirement further.
What happens after 30 days?
You will have consumed 45 litres. Most reported benefits — energy, skin, headaches — come from correcting a deficit, not from drinking extra beyond your needs.
Can you drink too much water?
Yes, though it is rare. Drinking several litres in a short period can dilute blood sodium (hyponatraemia), which is dangerous. Spread intake through the day.
Assumptions behind these numbers
- One glass is assumed to be 250 ml (8 oz).
- General information only — kidney or heart conditions change fluid targets. Ask a doctor.
