What happens if you eat 100 extra calories a day for a year?
Adding 100 calories a day means about 36.5K calories over 1 year — roughly 10.4 lb (4.7 kg) gained, before your metabolism adapts.
The numbers
Timeline: what happens, and when
- Day 1+0.0 lb (0.0 kg)
100 calories eaten on top of maintenance — a straight-line estimate of 0.0 lb (0.0 kg) gained, or about 0.0 lb (0.0 kg) once metabolic adaptation is accounted for.
- After 1 week+0.2 lb (0.1 kg)
700 calories eaten on top of maintenance — a straight-line estimate of 0.2 lb (0.1 kg) gained, or about 0.2 lb (0.1 kg) once metabolic adaptation is accounted for.
- After 1 month+0.9 lb (0.4 kg)
3K calories eaten on top of maintenance — a straight-line estimate of 0.9 lb (0.4 kg) gained, or about 0.9 lb (0.4 kg) once metabolic adaptation is accounted for.
- After 3 months+2.5 lb (1.1 kg)
9K calories eaten on top of maintenance — a straight-line estimate of 2.6 lb (1.2 kg) gained, or about 2.5 lb (1.1 kg) once metabolic adaptation is accounted for.
- After 6 months+4.9 lb (2.2 kg)
18K calories eaten on top of maintenance — a straight-line estimate of 5.1 lb (2.3 kg) gained, or about 4.9 lb (2.2 kg) once metabolic adaptation is accounted for.
- After 1 year+9.4 lb (4.3 kg)
36.5K calories eaten on top of maintenance — a straight-line estimate of 10.4 lb (4.7 kg) gained, or about 9.4 lb (4.3 kg) once metabolic adaptation is accounted for.
What this actually means
Why the straight line is wrong (in your favour or against you)
The 3,500 calories per pound rule assumes your body never adapts. In reality, energy expenditure falls as you lose weight and rises as you gain, so a 100 kcal daily change converges toward a new stable weight rather than continuing forever.
The surplus is easy to hit by accident
100 extra calories is one large latte and a muffin. Nobody decides to gain 10.4 lb (4.7 kg) a year; it is decided 300 calories at a time.
Protein and lifting change the composition
The scale only shows total mass. With adequate protein and resistance training, more of a deficit comes from fat and more of a surplus goes to muscle.
What if you changed the number?
Same habit, different size. Each one is a full simulation of its own.

Frequently asked questions
How much weight is 100 calories a day more?
About 0.2 lb (0.1 kg) a week and 0.9 lb (0.4 kg) a month on a straight-line estimate; over a year, expect somewhat less than 10.4 lb (4.7 kg) because metabolism adapts.
How long does it take to see a difference?
Scale changes appear within 1–2 weeks (partly water). Visible changes usually need 6–10 lb of real change, so about 9.3 months at this rate.
Is this healthy?
Sustained surplus at this level leads to steady fat gain and, over years, raises the risk of metabolic disease. If the goal is muscle, a smaller surplus (200–300 kcal) plus training wastes far less of it as fat.
Assumptions behind these numbers
- Uses 3,500 kcal ≈ 1 lb of body fat, with a decay factor for metabolic adaptation.
- General education, not a medical or dietary prescription.
