What happens if you eat 200 extra calories a day?

Adding 200 calories a day means about 73K calories over 1 year — roughly 20.9 lb (9.5 kg) gained, before your metabolism adapts.

Timeline: what happens, and when

  1. Day 1+0.1 lb (0.0 kg)

200 calories eaten on top of maintenance — a straight-line estimate of 0.1 lb (0.0 kg) gained, or about 0.1 lb (0.0 kg) once metabolic adaptation is accounted for.

  2. After 1 week+0.4 lb (0.2 kg)

1.4K calories eaten on top of maintenance — a straight-line estimate of 0.4 lb (0.2 kg) gained, or about 0.4 lb (0.2 kg) once metabolic adaptation is accounted for.

  3. After 1 month+1.7 lb (0.8 kg)

6K calories eaten on top of maintenance — a straight-line estimate of 1.7 lb (0.8 kg) gained, or about 1.7 lb (0.8 kg) once metabolic adaptation is accounted for.

  4. After 3 months+5.0 lb (2.3 kg)

18K calories eaten on top of maintenance — a straight-line estimate of 5.1 lb (2.3 kg) gained, or about 5.0 lb (2.3 kg) once metabolic adaptation is accounted for.

  5. After 6 months+9.8 lb (4.4 kg)

36K calories eaten on top of maintenance — a straight-line estimate of 10.3 lb (4.7 kg) gained, or about 9.8 lb (4.4 kg) once metabolic adaptation is accounted for.

  6. After 1 year+18.8 lb (8.5 kg)

73K calories eaten on top of maintenance — a straight-line estimate of 20.9 lb (9.5 kg) gained, or about 18.8 lb (8.5 kg) once metabolic adaptation is accounted for.

What this actually means

Why the straight line is wrong (in your favour or against you)

The 3,500 calories per pound rule assumes your body never adapts. In reality, energy expenditure falls as you lose weight and rises as you gain, so a 200 kcal daily change converges toward a new stable weight rather than continuing forever.

The surplus is easy to hit by accident

200 extra calories is one large latte and a muffin. Nobody decides to gain 20.9 lb (9.5 kg) a year; it is decided 300 calories at a time.

Protein and lifting change the composition

The scale only shows total mass. With adequate protein and resistance training, more of a deficit comes from fat and more of a surplus goes to muscle.

Frequently asked questions

How much weight is 200 calories a day more?

About 0.4 lb (0.2 kg) a week and 1.7 lb (0.8 kg) a month on a straight-line estimate; over a year, expect somewhat less than 20.9 lb (9.5 kg) because metabolism adapts.

How long does it take to see a difference?

Scale changes appear within 1–2 weeks (partly water). Visible changes usually need 6–10 lb of real change, so about 4.7 months at this rate.

Is this healthy?

Sustained surplus at this level leads to steady fat gain and, over years, raises the risk of metabolic disease. If the goal is muscle, a smaller surplus (200–300 kcal) plus training wastes far less of it as fat.

Assumptions behind these numbers

  • Uses 3,500 kcal ≈ 1 lb of body fat, with a decay factor for metabolic adaptation.
  • General education, not a medical or dietary prescription.
