What happens if you skip breakfast every day for a year?

Cutting 400 calories a day means about 146K calories over 1 year — roughly 41.7 lb (18.9 kg) lost, before your metabolism adapts.

Timeline: what happens, and when

  1. Day 1-0.1 lb (0.1 kg)

400 calories not eaten — a straight-line estimate of 0.1 lb (0.1 kg) lost, or about 0.1 lb (0.1 kg) once metabolic adaptation is accounted for. Money saved: $4.

  2. After 1 week-0.8 lb (0.4 kg)

2.8K calories not eaten — a straight-line estimate of 0.8 lb (0.4 kg) lost, or about 0.8 lb (0.4 kg) once metabolic adaptation is accounted for. Money saved: $28.

  3. After 1 month-3.4 lb (1.5 kg)

12K calories not eaten — a straight-line estimate of 3.4 lb (1.6 kg) lost, or about 3.4 lb (1.5 kg) once metabolic adaptation is accounted for. Money saved: $120.

  4. After 3 months-10.0 lb (4.6 kg)

36K calories not eaten — a straight-line estimate of 10.3 lb (4.7 kg) lost, or about 10.0 lb (4.6 kg) once metabolic adaptation is accounted for. Money saved: $360.

  5. After 6 months-19.6 lb (8.9 kg)

72K calories not eaten — a straight-line estimate of 20.6 lb (9.3 kg) lost, or about 19.6 lb (8.9 kg) once metabolic adaptation is accounted for. Money saved: $720.

  6. After 1 year-37.5 lb (17.0 kg)

146K calories not eaten — a straight-line estimate of 41.7 lb (18.9 kg) lost, or about 37.5 lb (17.0 kg) once metabolic adaptation is accounted for. Money saved: $1,460.

What this actually means

Why the straight line is wrong (in your favour or against you)

The 3,500 calories per pound rule assumes your body never adapts. In reality, energy expenditure falls as you lose weight and rises as you gain, so a 400 kcal daily change converges toward a new stable weight rather than continuing forever.

Small and sustainable beats aggressive

A 400 kcal deficit is roughly 4.0 fewer snacks a day. Deficits above ~750 kcal/day tend to cost muscle and are abandoned within weeks.

Protein and lifting change the composition

The scale only shows total mass. With adequate protein and resistance training, more of a deficit comes from fat and more of a surplus goes to muscle.

Frequently asked questions

How much weight is 400 calories a day less?

About 0.8 lb (0.4 kg) a week and 3.4 lb (1.6 kg) a month on a straight-line estimate; over a year, expect somewhat less than 41.7 lb (18.9 kg) because metabolism adapts.

How long does it take to see a difference?

Scale changes appear within 1–2 weeks (partly water). Visible changes usually need 6–10 lb of real change, so about 2.3 months at this rate.

Is this healthy?

A moderate deficit with enough protein, fibre and micronutrients is generally safe for healthy adults. Very low intakes and rapid loss are a different question — talk to a doctor or dietitian.

Assumptions behind these numbers

  • Uses 3,500 kcal ≈ 1 lb of body fat, with a decay factor for metabolic adaptation.
  • General education, not a medical or dietary prescription.
